➼ History & Context
The Buermann Striped Spurs are one of the most sought-after and famous designs from one of the most famous spur makers in cowboy history. They are truly a feather in the cap of any cowboy collector.
August Buermann was born in 1842 in Germany, and apprenticed in locksmithing before immigrating to the US and enrolling in the Army at 22. While in New Jersey, he worked for a blacksmith, but soon worked his way up and actually bought the company in 1866, renaming it the Buermann Manufacturing Company.
Famous for his Star Brand that he put behind the strap lug, Buermann created many original spur designs and fastidiously patented all of them. His company built up the most complete catalog of bits & spurs in the country, with 441 spur styles and 496 bit patterns, with characteristics from a range of styles including Mexico, Texas, California, and even older European military. One of the first to mass-produce spurs, he nonetheless always maintained a line of top quality hand-forged spurs.
By the early 1900s, the majority of people in the military were wearing his spurs, and he won multiple awards for excellence. Along with the more common solid brass and iron spurs, Buermann actually created two entirely new metals – Star Steel Silver and Hercules Bronze. Whenever he used his unique metals, he stamped their name along with his usual makers marks: the Star Brand, the hand-forged symbol of the Arm & Hammer, and BA often on custom pieces.
Buermann spurs are highly collectible for their place in history as well as their top quality craftsmanship.
